Process Development / Re-Engineering / Improvement

"The most important change for project personnel and decision makers who influence the project is thinking of a project as a process. Rather than manage the output of a project, management is focused on the total process and sub-processes. In this manner, the process is held constant after it has been proven capable of the work and the product will naturally meet the requirements." (Quality Management, Lewis R. Ireland)

Take the baking of a cake, for example. The ingredients are measured. There are no substitutions or mis-measurements. The ingredients are mixed in a specific order and for a specific duration. A cake pan, of a specific size and material, is coated with oil and the mixture placed into it. The oven, pre-heated to a specific temperature, receives the cake pan with the mixture. The mixture is then baked for a specific duration until it meets a doneness test. Once removed from the oven the cake is then cooled for a specific amount of time. It is then removed from the pan. To finish this process, there is a subprocess called icing the cake. Icing is prepared and applied to the cake in a uniform manner.

If the recipe (process) is followed it is reasonable to assume the cake will meet the texture, taste, size and aroma specified by the people who will be eating the cake (the customers). This process (recipe), continuously repeated and held constant, will produce quality cakes over and over again with continuous customer satisfaction. If the recipe (process) is varied, the cake not cooked long enough or an ingredient is missing, then the cake will be substandard and the customers will not be satisfied.

Integrated Process Developers, Inc. (IPDI) believes in process, more specifically, integrated processes so much we named the company for it!

IPDI created the MAPDTM Strategy for process development specifically designed for multi-team environments. The MAPD™ Strategy's three elements, PLAN, MANAGE, & VERIFY, encompass the full needs of the organization as it relates to projects.

The Three Aspects of an Integrated Process:

PLAN - Document what you do
The PLAN aspect contains the processes, deliverables, generic templates and process information required to perform and successfully complete your company's projects.

As the diagram indicates, the three aspects of process development are inter-related.

In order to achieve true process integration, the people using the process must practice ACCOUNTABILITY, DISCIPLINE & INTEGRITY.

MANAGE - Do what you document
The MANAGE aspect contains the project management information, based on the Project Management Institute's PMBOK, required to manage the project utilizing the information developed in the PLAN aspect.
VERIFY - Prove it
The VERIFY aspect utilizes the project specific work plans from the MANAGE aspect to status the project's deliverables developed in the PLAN aspect.

In "The 'Sound' of Project Management", we talk about the need for the sheet music (the integrated process). So

  • If you are tired of your company sounding like a warm-up instead of the performance of the symphony
  • If you are tired of the same problems over and over again
  • If you are tired of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing

then give us a call. IPDI utilizes proven techniques to develop, re-engineer and continuously improve your processes to meet your corporate and customer needs.
